Just hours before a 2021 school shooting, a teacher spotted a disturbing drawing on a student’s math worksheet: a gun, a bullet, and a person bleeding, with the words, “The thoughts won’t stop. Help me. Blood everywhere.” The student was taken to a counselor’s office, and his parents were called in. The meeting lasted just 12 minutes, and he went back to class. His backpack was never checked. Inside was a handgun and a journal detailing his plan to shoot up his classmates. Two hours later, he pulled the gun out of that backpack and started shooting.
