We’ve had some uncooperative weather here in Kenya, which has brought me back to the last time I stood beneath heavy cloud cover and rolling thunderheads on the savanna. Rain isn’t necessarily a reason to pack it in when photographing wildlife. Between downpours that replenish rivers and soak the land, the dark skies left behind can offer a far more compelling backdrop. The rain has also revealed some of the more unusual animal behavior I’ve witnessed, including families of lions licking water from one another’s fur in Tanzania’s Serengeti. Water restores green life and offers relief from the droughts that regularly shape parts of East Africa, including places like Amboseli National Park and the Serengeti ecosystem.
