“How the García Girls Lost Their Accents,” written by renowned Dominican-American author Julia Alvarez, follows the four García sisters and their lives through time. After fleeing the Dominican Republic with their parents to escape Rafael Trujillo’s dictatorial regime in 1960, Carla, Sandra, Yolanda, and Sofía arrive in New York City and struggle to assimilate into U.S. culture. Though the girls are caught between their peaceful and family-oriented life in the Dominican Republic and their new unfamiliar reality in NYC, they start adapting to fit into American culture but never forget where they came from.
