Six years ago I moved to London, and while my accent is still very American, the language around me has slowly worked its way in. For context, my husband is British and so are most of the people I spend my days working and chatting with. You can’t help but absorb it.
There are words I’ll never give up. But there are others that have crept in without me even trying, like saying something is quite nice, calling a good idea a “good shout”, asking if you fancy a coffee, describing an inconvenience as a bit of a faff. Even the occasional cheeky this or bloody that.
It’s such a small thing, but it’s also the joy of living somewhere different. New ways of expressing the same thoughts.
You don’t lose who you are. You just expand it a bit. 🇬🇧✨
