These cosmic clouds, called Herbig-Haro objects, are a telltale sign of a newly formed star. Formed when young stars expel jets of gas at incredibly high speeds, these superheated jets speed through space colliding with cooler surrounding materials. The result: these colorful cosmic wisps pictured by NASAHubble.
With Herbig-Haro objects, there is more than meets the eye. These cosmic objects help astronomers understand the turbulent interactions within stellar nurseries—and can help us pinpoint the location of stars invisible to the human eye.
For instance, astronomers once thought that the bright star to the right of the image was the source of these jets. In actuality, the young star system responsible for their creation is lurking out of sight, swaddled in the thick clouds of dust at the center of this image.
