In the 25 years since Red Wassenich uttered the phrase “keep Austin weird” while calling in to KOOP Radio’s “The Lounge Show,” Austin’s population has reached over 1 Million people. This rapid growth brought with it a great deal of change, with Austin losing many of the beloved people and places that kept it weird for so long. Still, some things endure. Much like our hometown, KOOP Radio has grown and changed over our 31 years, but always with our mission as our guidepost. We’ve helped “keep radio weird” by broadcasting the most diverse schedule of weekly programming in Austin — or anywhere else — produced entirely by volunteers from the community.
