Johnson also championed writing and storytelling as "revolutionary rights." "Books persist even when oppressors don’t want them to. They change lives, provide community, and serve as a lifeline for those who feel unseen, unheard and alone," they wrote. Calling out oppressive systems, Johnson called book banning "the product of a system that upholds an alternative history of the United States and the world we live in," noting how dangerous this can be for impressionable teens, and heralded the message that "queerness is not a monolith," and viewing it solely through the lens of white patriarchy "continues to erase or deny the painful history many of us in this country suffer through."
