Ohioans will no longer be allowed to buy pop or other sugary carbonated drinks with Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits, starting Oct. 1. The ban is part of an effort to "empower Ohioans to make healthier choices and to prioritize good nutrition," state officials said March 4. The U.S. Department of Agriculture, which granted Ohio's request for the ban, oversees SNAP and states administer it. The restriction will apply to beverages that list sugar, corn syrup, high-fructose corn syrup or other caloric sweeteners as the primary or secondary ingredient in carbonated water drinks.
