U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth shared a video of the sinking of Iranian frigate IRIS Dena in the Indian Ocean during a news conference this week. A torpedo fired by a U.S. submarine sank the Iranian warship near Sri Lanka in the Indian Ocean, roughly 1,000 miles from Iran’s coastal waters, Hegseth told reporters. “In the Indian Ocean—an American submarine sunk an Iranian warship, that thought it was safe in international waters," he said. “Instead, it was sunk by a torpedo—Quiet Death. The first sinking of an enemy ship by a torpedo since World War 2. Like in that war—back when we were still the War Department—we are fighting to win.” Sri Lanka deployed its navy to rescue some of the Iranian sailors from the vessel, with reports in the country’s press that as many as 80 of the ship’s crew had been killed, according to CBS.
