There will never be another #HurricaneMelissa. The WMO Hurricane Committee has retired ‘Melissa’ from its rotating list of names following the death and destruction it caused in the Caribbean in October 2025. According to noaa's National Hurricane Center (nwsnhc_hurricanes), Melissa was the strongest hurricane to make landfall in Jamaica and ranks among the most devastating storms in Atlantic basin history. The committee has selected ‘Molly’ as its replacement. So what’s in a name you might ask? Naming hurricanes helps in the communication of storm warnings and to alert people about potentially life-threatening risks. Alternating between male and female, names are repeated every six years, unless a storm is so deadly or destructive that its name is retired.
