Elon Musk just set one of the most ambitious targets in the history of spaceflight. The SpaceX CEO says the company’s next-generation Starship rocket could eventually deliver more than 1 million tons of payload to orbit every year. To put that in perspective, humanity has launched only a tiny fraction of that amount into space across the entire history of space exploration. Musk believes Starship’s fully reusable design is the key to dramatically lowering launch costs while massively increasing how much cargo can reach orbit. The long-term vision goes far beyond satellites. Starship is being designed to support everything from massive satellite constellations and deep-space missions to lunar infrastructure and eventually human settlements on Mars. If SpaceX can achieve rapid launch cadence with a reusable system, the economics of space could change entirely.
