A sobering fact: We’ve lost around 3 billion birds in North America since 1970 — a loss of nearly one in four birds. A new study finds that populations are shrinking faster than ever, primarily because of high-intensity agriculture and warming temperatures. About 1 in 3 American bird species need our help. And yet, this week a congressional panel is meeting to consider weakening a key bird-protection law, the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. “Extinction starts with declines like these, and birds are often the indicators that our environment is too toxic to support other life," said Tara Zuardo, a senior campaigner at the Center.
