In the 1890s, the L.A. Times used carrier pigeons to deliver news from Catalina Island. The birds flew more than 26 miles over open ocean, with stories wrapped around their legs. When the L.A. Times printed the stories, the pigeons even got byline credit — with names like Orlando, Del Mar, Rags, Ventura, Whitewings and Lulu running at the top of each piece.
