Synthetic braiding hair and human hair extensions tested positive for lead, carcinogens, and toxic chemicals. Last year, we reported that #ConsumerReports found dangerous chemicals in popular synthetic braiding hair. Now, new testing expands the scope — including products marketed as 100% human or plant-based. Researchers detected lead in 29 of 30 hair extension products tested. All samples contained volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and dozens of chemicals appeared on major hazard lists, including California’s Prop 65 list. Dr. James Rogers of Consumer Reports says one human hair product contained the highest levels of lead detected.
