Our Jazz International Initiative continues building cultural bridges across the Caribbean and New Orleans. Our third stop brought us to Samaná, Dominican Republic, where we met with cultural leaders, scholars, and tradition bearers working to preserve Bambula, a musical and dance tradition deeply connected to the historic gatherings of Congo Square in New Orleans. These conversations highlighted how Bambula remains a living cultural practice across the Caribbean. We were honored to meet leaders including Mártires Mercedes, Wildo Benjamín, Virgilio Mercado, Luis Felipe Rodríguez, and Wilfredo Padrón, whose work continues to protect and celebrate these traditions. Through research, collaboration, and cultural exchange, we continue strengthening the shared musical heritage that connects communities across the Caribbean and New Orleans.
