Yesterday, Governor Burgum signed SB 2150—a bill that bans nearly all abortions in North Dakota, except in very narrow circumstances where a pregnant person’s life is at risk. The bill also provides an exception for survivors of rape or incest, but only until six weeks of pregnancy—before most people even know they are pregnant.
Although we do not provide abortion care in North Dakota, we understand that the governor’s decision to pass this law is extremely harmful. Recently, the North Dakota Supreme Court blocked an abortion trigger ban from taking effect, citing the right to life-saving and health preserving abortions. The need for this care has not changed.
Abortion is essential health care. It is a human right. North Dakotans deserve better. We're here with you, and we will continue to stand with you—no matter what.
