The irony of James May, famously nicknamed “Captain Slow”, is that one of his real-life speeding incidents involved an incredibly small margin over the limit.
In 2016, May revealed that he had been caught speeding just minutes after buying a new Honda CBR600RR motorcycle in West London.
He was stopped less than a mile from the dealership and joked that he had been “busted for speeding in the first 16 miles” of ownership.
The funny part is that the road he was on had recently been reduced from 40 mph to a 30 mph limit, so he likely wasn’t going dramatically fast, just slightly over the new limit.
May admitted it was “a fair cop” and ended up taking a speed awareness course instead of receiving points on his license.
The story became a running joke among fans because May’s reputation from Top Gear is being the slow, cautious driver compared with Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond.
