I’ll start off by saying I have a personal bias for training Z1 training in a 5 zone model. I believe it’s important to know that just because it works for one person, it doesn’t mean it will work for everyone. I uplift and encourage anything that helps us move, be active, and get out the door!
My personal reason for loving Z1 effort is that this type of effort is low-intensity. It allows me to accumulate high training volume without burnout. It also lets me maintain consistency which is arguably the most important factor in endurance improvement.
Aerobic base development is one of the major benefits of easy or Z1 training. It increases mitochondrial density (your cells’ “engines” for aerobic metabolism). And it enhances capillary density, which improves oxygen delivery to your muscles.
Z1 runs, rides, or swims promote active recovery by stimulating blood flow without causing additional muscle damage or metabolic stress. They help:
• Clear metabolic waste (like lactate)
• Enhance ti...
