The days of brown HMRC letters landing on your doormat may soon be numbered.
From Spring 2026, HMRC plans to move to a “digital-by-default” system. This means most taxpayers will receive notifications when a new HMRC letter or document is available in their Personal Tax Account or the HMRC app, rather than receiving it by post.
You’ll receive an email notification letting you know when something new has been uploaded for you to view.
The move is part of HMRC’s wider push to modernise communication and could save around £50 million a year in printing and postage.
Paper letters won’t disappear entirely though. People who are digitally excluded or who opt out will still receive post.
Make sure you’ve got the HMRC app to keep up-to-date.
