Charles “Sonny” Lee Burton’s sentence was commuted on March 10th by Governor Kay Ivey. He now will serve life in prison with no chance of parole. Burton was set to be executed on March 12 by nitrogen hypoxia for the murder of Doug Battle during a robbery at AutoZone in Talledega in 1991. Burton wasn’t the triggerman, but Alabama planned to execute him anyway. Calls for Burton to be granted clemency have been growing over the last few weeks, including from former jurors on the case and the victim’s daughter, Tori Battle. In a letter to the governor, Tori Battle wrote, "I want to remind you of the man this is all supposedly being done for. My father, Doug Battle, was many things. He was strong, but he valued peace. He did not believe in revenge. And in that way, I am very much his daughter. I hope you will consider meeting with me to discuss this.
