Gov. Kay Ivey has commuted the sentence of Charles Lee “Sonny” Burton to life in prison with no chance of parole. Burton, 75, was set to be executed on March 12 by nitrogen hypoxia for the 1991 murder of Doug Battle. Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall condemned the announcement adding that he was “deeply disappointed” to learn about the commutation. “Longstanding Alabama law recognizes accomplice liability, as has every judge that has touched this case over three decades," said Marshall. “Burton does not deserve special treatment because he is old —he could have been executed a long time ago, but like many death -row inmates, he chose to drag out his case through endless frivolous appeals," Marshall wrote.
