Introducing the 2026 All Campus Commencement speaker: Fred Ramsdell ’83 — Nobel laureate, immunologist, and proud UC San Diego alum. 🎓 Fred’s journey began as a first-generation college student with a deep curiosity about the natural world. At UC San Diego, an immunology course sparked his passion for the discipline and set him on a path to scientific discovery. He graduated in 1983 with a degree in biochemistry and cell biology and went on to become a leader in biotechnology and immunological research. In 2025, Fred and collaborator Mary Brunkow along with Shimon Sakaguchi were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for groundbreaking discoveries that transformed our understanding of how the immune system prevents autoimmune disease. 🧬 On June 13 at RIMAC Field, Fred will return to campus to inspire the Class of 2026 and receive the UC San Diego Medal in recognition of his scientific achievements and service.
