History up close @ Himeji Castle 🏯
This past weekend, some of our Open Campus students took an overnight trip to Kobe, with a stop at Himeji Castle along the way. Often called the White Heron Castle, a nickname inspired by its bright white walls and striking silhouette. Originally built in the 1600s, it’s considered Japan’s best-preserved feudal castle and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993.
The castle complex includes more than 80 connected buildings, with winding paths and gates originally designed to confuse invading enemies on their way to the main tower. Even more impressive, the structure has survived wars, earthquakes, and World War II bombings while remaining remarkably intact.
On the road from Kyoto to Himeji, students also warmed up with some Kobe and Himeji trivia on the bus, making the journey part of the fun (+ history) too 🚌
