Tessa Thompson, known for her roles in the “Creed” and “Thor” series, is set to make her Broadway debut after joining the cast of “The Fear of 13,” which tells the story of real-life person Nick Yarris, who was sentenced to death row for a crime he didn’t commit. The 42-year-old actress, who is of Mexican and Panamanian descent, is taking on the role of Jackie Schaffer, a prison volunteer with the Pennsylvania Coalition Against the Death Penalty who fell in love with Yarris and helped him prove his innocence.
During an appearance on the Julia Cunningham Show, Thompson spoke a little more in-depth about Yarris and Schaffer’s story, saying “They spent just under a decade together, and she was a huge part of eventually getting him exonerated… It is in part talking about Nick’s story, also talking about frustrating problems inside of the carceral system, in our criminal justice system here in this country, and also this beautiful, complicated love story between these two folks.”
