NEW TODAY: Guy Rivera will face a sea of blue as his trial gets underway this morning in Queens Criminal Court in Kew Gardens, where opening statements are set to begin. Rivera is accused of fatally shooting NYPD Detective Jonathan Diller, a 31-year-old Massapequa Park native, during a March 25, 2024 traffic stop in Far Rockaway. Investigators say officers believed the two men in the car were armed and planning to rob a nearby cell phone store. Prosecutors say Rivera refused to comply and shot Diller multiple times in the stomach, then tried to fire at another officer before his gun jammed and he was shot by police. Diller was rushed to the hospital, where he died.
