HYDRANT HEROES: Many Long Island fire departments tried a new approach this winter, hosting contests to reward residents who dug out fire hydrants after snowstorms. In Plainview, dozens of kids were hailed as heroes Sunday for clearing hydrants during the recent blizzard. One honoree, Jack Mayrose, cleared a hydrant firefighters later used to battle a fire.
