Nebraska wrapped up its second week of spring football with its first scrimmage in the books, offering an early look at how the Huskers are adapting to new defensive schemes and offensive adjustments. New defensive coordinator Rob Aurich, hired after serving as defensive coordinator at San Diego State, said the early portion of spring has focused on installing the foundation of his system. “You want to lay down your core concepts and your foundation,” Aurich said. “The second third of spring, you want to get into the level 200, 300 — the higher-level stuff — now that they have the foundation.” Seven practices into spring drills, Aurich said the defense is progressing but still working toward consistency as players transition from learning concepts to executing them at full speed. “We’re entering that second third of spring ball where we’re asking the guys to take base-level understanding and now apply the high-speed decision-making that we need to see,” he said.
