Pixar’s chief creative officer, Pete Docter, says LGBTQ+ themes were removed from ‘Elio’ because the studio didn’t want the film to push conversations some parents may not feel ready to have with their kids.
In a 6 March interview with the Wall Street Journal, Docter explained that Pixar’s goal is to make films that appeal to a wide audience, adding, “We’re making a movie, not hundreds of millions of dollars of therapy.”
The film, which originally had queer-coded elements in its early development, went through major changes before release. Despite the reworking, ‘Elio’ debuted with one of the lowest openings in Pixar’s history, sparking ongoing debate about creative choices, representation, and the balance between storytelling and broad audience appeal.
