Latasha Harlins was 15 years old, raised in South Central LA, earned straight A’s at Westchester High School and talked consistently about wanting to become an attorney and build programs for neighborhood youth when she grew up. Her life was cut short when she was fatally shot by a Korean shop owner, Soon Ja Du, who thought that she was stealing a bottle of orange juice. Thirty years later Latasha Harlins first memorial is up in Algin Sutton Recreation Center. This year marks 30 years since her senseless and unjust death. A jury found Soon Ja Du guilty of voluntary manslaughter, which carried a maximum sentence of 16 years in prison. But Judge Joyce Karlin, who reasoned that Du acted out of fear due to previous robberies at the store, sentenced her to probation, 400 hours of community service and a $500 fine.
