As we embark on #womenshistorymonth, I can’t help but focus on the mental health aspect of women...and more specifically, Black women. • • • Black women have been and continue to be negatively affected by prejudice and discrimination in the health care system. • • • Often times we receive inadequate treatment, misdiagnoses and lack of cultural competence by health professionals which in turn, creates a distrust and prevents many Black women from even seeking or staying in treatment. • • • And let’s not forget that socio-economic factors play a part too, which in turn reduces our options for treatment. • • • Black women, let’s not forget to be selfish enough to put ourselves first and be mindful that we can’t pour from an empty cup. • • • And if you feel that you need to seek professional help, do it.
