Last week we went behind the scenes with 167 Raw to see what happens when a restaurant sets aside their oyster shells instead of tossing them in the trash… This week, we followed those shells to their next stop. Thanks to SCDNR’s SCORE’s Oyster Recycling Program, used shells from local restaurants are picked up twice a week and returned to our waterways, right where they belong. What looks like leftovers are actually the building blocks for new oyster reefs. Here’s something most people don’t realize. There is currently a critical shortage of recycled oyster shells, and the SCDNR SCORE program needs all the help they can get. Every 3 bushels of oysters can create up to 10 square feet of reef. Those reefs protect our coastline, improve water quality, and create habitat for countless marine species. It all starts with a shell.
