Jump up, super star (cluster)! Meet Westerlund 1, one of the few super star clusters ever found in our galaxy. It is the biggest, brightest, and closest super star cluster to Earth, located around 12,000 light-years away in the constellation Ara. The reason we can’t see Westerlund 1 from Earth with the naked eye is that it’s shrouded in thick dust clouds. What makes Westerlund 1 super? Super star clusters are more luminous and massive than typical star clusters, containing more than 10,000 times our Sun’s mass. Westerlund 1 has between 50,000 and 100,000 times the mass of our Sun. This image is a cosmic collaboration between three of our powerful space telescopes. NASAChandraXray collected X-ray data (represented by pink, blue, purple, and orange), NASAWebb collected data in infrared (yellow, gold, and blue), and NASAHubble collected optical light (cyan, gray, and light yellow). Image description: A dramatic, luminous burst of rainbow light fills the image against black space. Mult...
