Gov. Mikie Sherrill called out the practice of “surveillance pricing” in her big budget speech Tuesday, saying stores “switch prices based on things like time of day, or even your gender, or phone browsing history.” Lawmakers in Trenton are working on a bill that would ban surveillance pricing. Specifically, the bill would ban businesses from using people’s data for “personalized algorithmic pricing.” It would still allow stores to use loyalty cards for promotions and discounts.
