An adult king penguin searches for its chick in the crowd with a belly full of krill to feed its young. It might sound like a parent’s worst nightmare, but king penguins can easily find each other through their unique calls, like how we have our own names. In fact, a penguin can pinpoint its partner or chick’s voice among thousands of other calling penguins. Our cofounder paulnicklen captured this image on South Georgia Island, a remote, mountainous, and largely uninhabited island in the middle of the South Atlantic Ocean. Well, not inhabited by humans anyway. Here, you can find enormous colonies of king, macaroni, gentoo, and chinstrap penguins. King penguins alone form around half a million breeding pairs during the austral summer. It’s hard to put into words what it’s like to see this many penguins at once.
