When I was a kid in elementary school, some kids used to use me as target practice… throwing plums at me because they didn’t understand why I was different. It hurt. And for a long time, I wondered what was “wrong” with me. Now one of my favorite things to do is visit schools and talk to kids about my autism, because the more we understand each other, the kinder the world becomes. I love reading with them, especially “Red Fuzzy Rug” by my good friend Maja and Jeremiah Watkins. It’s a beautiful story about kids who are different, and how being different can actually be pretty cool when we learn, play, and grow together.
