As we head into a new week, it’s a good reminder that in youth sport and in life, culture is everything. And culture doesn’t start with players. It starts with the adults around them. Young athletes thrive in positive environments. They grow in confidence when they feel supported, encouraged, and safe to make mistakes. But negativity, gossip, sideline politics, and personal criticism quietly do the opposite, they create pressure, anxiety, and take the joy out of the game. When the focus shifts from lifting people up to pulling people down, we lose sight of what truly matters, which is helping young people to grow, build resilience, and develop both as athletes and as human beings.
