Peters Valley School of Craft presented Maestro Porfirio Gutierrez’s in-person lecture, trunk show, and workshop called “A Material Exploration: The Cochineal Insect.” Porfirio Gutierrez is a California based Zapotec textile artist specializing in natural dyeing techniques. He talks about identity and migration. As a visual artist, meeting Porfirio Gutierrez was life affirming because his creative practice involves family, traditional wisdom, plants as medicine, and determination. His art — dynamic weavings both functional and sensory — hold magic in its threads.
