The word Mohabbat translate to ‘love’ in Urdu. Not romantic love tho, it carries the feeling of longing, ache, devotion, and the sweetness and sorrow that exist inside that deeeep kinda love. Arooj Aftab is a Pakistani-born, Brooklyn-based composer and vocalist known for blending ghazal, jazz, ambient minimalism, and Sufi-influenced poetry. I saw her just weeks ago in Amsterdam with the Metropole orchestra. Me and my friend’s jaws dropped by these frequenties. Mohabbat won her a Grammy in 2022, making her the first Pakistani artist to win one(!).
