This was one of my favorite abandoned buildings to shoot; I say was, because it recently succumbed to weather and time and tipped over. Located near where I grew up, it had its roof taken off by a tornado many years ago, but despite this, the walls remained intact. Shooting abandoned buildings is bittersweet; you come to love a certain space and the history/stories it represents, while simultaneously knowing its time is limited. That being said, it’s so special to become a part of a building’s narrative, and to memorialize it in images while it lasts. I suppose it’s an allegory for our lives as well; our lives are built and filled with a riot of stories for a brief moment, and then we topple over into the grave and leave ruins that tell our story, left behind in the artifacts and memories we leave behind. Time is your most precious resource; spend it wisely.
