Our recent paper highlights what people who were long-term participants in McMaster PACE program. Older adults who stick with supervised, twice-weekly workouts can largely avoid the steep declines in aerobic capacity and muscle strength typically seen with aging.
🔹 Key Findings
• Men in the program experienced declines in VO₂peak of ~2% per year—significantly less than the 2.1–2.2% expected.
• Women actually improved their VO₂peak over time, reversing the usual 1.6–1.7% decline.
• Both sexes saw far smaller losses in 1-RM strength (bench press, row, knee extension) compared with normative rates of 2.6–3.4% per year.
🔹 Why It Matters
With only 40% of older adults meeting activity guidelines, accessible, community-based programs offer a scalable approach to preserving independence, reducing fall risk, and enhancing quality of life.
