The Power of Exercise - (More) Life After Cancer
A recent phase 3 randomized trial published in the New England Journal of Medicine shows just how powerful exercise can be for colon cancer survivors.
In the CHALLENGE trial, patients who completed adjuvant chemotherapy were randomized to either a 3-year, structured exercise program or to receive standard health education materials. By nearly eight years of follow-up, those who took part in the exercise program had a 28% lower risk of disease recurrence or new primary cancer and a 37% lower risk of death compared with the health-education group.
The 5-year disease-free survival was 80.3% in the exercise group versus 73.9% in controls, and the 8-year overall survival was 90.3% versus 83.2%. Even modest increases—roughly 45–60 minutes of BRISK WALKING three to four times a week—translated into significant gains in both cancer outcomes and quality of life.
