Growing up without much family, I never spoke about them. Great Uncle Frank became a special figure and a consistent male role model in my life, even though I met him only once, 35 ish years ago, completely unaware of his life story. Frank was a joker and a wise guy, but I recently discovered he was also a hero. After Googling him, I sadly found out he passed in 2014. He survived Dunkirk, became a sergeant in the British Army, joined the Commandos, and served in Popski's Private Army in Egypt and Italy. In 1952, Frank sailed on the Queen Mary to the US with his wife and daughters, settling in California after a stint in New York. He divorced in the 1960s and around 1983, Frank met Nancy Fullerton, a nurse providing him care after he suffered severe heart problems. I met Nancy; she was lovely.
