"American White Pelican 1" American White pelicans are one of the largest birds in North America. Each summer these beautiful birds spend time on the Bow river in Calgary and in wetlands across the south of the province. On this particular shoot, I found a good sized colony at a conservation wetland maintained by Ducks Unlimited. As I approached I saw large groups taking off, foraging and returning. This is a shot from my slow and stealthy approach. I'm always careful to maintain my distance so as not to disturb the birds. Sometimes they're smarter than I am though. From my "completely hidden" vantage I waited and waited for another group to take off. Nothing. Eventually after backing off quite some distance the pelicans took off for another foraging flight. Coincidence? Maybe, and I certainly hope so.
