Meeting people who have a unique way of seeing the world and have a gift for sharing with others is a rarity. When Dustin introduced himself to me and shared some of his work I was in awe. No Jacques Cousteau doc, no fast paced surf film, or scuba short had really captured the essence of the ocean and put it into a narrative that showed the beauty of the ocean. His videos were welcoming and liberating. Completely counter to how most people perceive the relationship between Black people and water. During the 50 and 60’s due to Jim Crow laws, masses of the black community never learned how to swim because they didn’t have access to pools and that hurdle is still present due to that legacy perpetuating. I invited Dustin over for a short interview because for Black History month I thought it was important to share his world underwater and encourage more people of color to enjoy the serenity of the sea.
