Deadlifts are not bad for your back. Your back is designed to flex, bend, stabilise & move. That’s why you have all those muscles and the spine is in segments. For some, a traditional deadlift might not be the best option (yet), as their body is not tolerant of it. But you can certainly find a variation that works. And even then, the need to add a restriction on a movement should just mean “not yet”, never say never. Because as always doing or not doing something is goal and tolerance dependant. No movement is inherently bad. The body just may be unprepared at the time. At the end of the day, a deadlift just has an aggressive sounding name. We might simply call it a hip hinge to the uninitiated. Reduce the barrier to entry, and reduce the fear surrounding the name. Lifting your child, picking up something off the ground, reaching down from standing, and tucking the sheets under the bed are all deadlift type movements. We almost all do deadlifts.
