Morning sun over Kamdesh. Kamdesh is a pictrureesque mountain village with an elevation of 2000m+. The district produces remarkable craftsmanship in wood work and carpentry. The first outsider to visit Kamdesh was a British soldier in the 1890s named George Robertson and wrote of his travels in “The Kafirs of Hindu Kush”. Kamdesh is probably the most up to date and least remote district in Nuristan. It has to do with being close to Pakistan’s Chitral, and the nearest town in Kunar is a 2 hour drive with a smoother road compared to going into Parun or Waigal. But this proximity to civilisation comes with a price. Kamdesh has been at the center of warfare in the past 20 years. They have been shelled and droned by all sides. The Battle of Kamdesh in 2009 became “bloodiest #American engagement in #Afghanistan”. The film “Outpost” is based on it. Despite enduring tragedies, I found Kamdeshis to be bright, innovative and well connected to the world beyond #Nuristan.
