As we considered returning to Beirut last summer before the city was under attack , my brother said, ‘The problem is the sonic booms would frighten the children.’ The city was experiencing frequent sonic booms from Israeli jets, a form of psychological warfare that alongside the constant buzz of surveillance drones disrupted daily life. We ultimately decided against the trip. Now, I look forward to the real soundscape of Beirut—the comforting sounds of my father’s land.
