It’s with immense sadness that we share news of the passing of Andy Altmann, andy_altmann_studio, one-half of the iconic design studio Why Not Associates.
Andy’s fearless creativity helped shape the visual culture of modern Britain…from groundbreaking work for the BBC, Tate Modern, and Royal Mail, to the legendary Comedy Carpet in Blackpool. Why Not’s Sensation poster for Charles Saatchi’s 1997 Royal Academy exhibition became a cultural landmark and a defining symbol of contemporary art’s new era with the YBAs, and was an inspiration as we laid the foundations for DIGITALISM. And so we were deeply honoured when Andy generously agreed to create the catalogue cover for our inaugural show, PIVOTAL: Digitalism, as part of British Art Fair, held at the Saatchi Gallery in 2024.
His contribution helped us mark a historic moment — the first dedicated digital art section in the Fair’s 36-year history, and the birth of Digitalism as a new art movement, 150 ...
