#throwbackthursday In 2013, as a tutor for the brilliant Abingdon Film Unit, founded in 2003 by my mentor, dear best friend and working partner, documentary filmmaker Michael Grigsby, along with Abingdon’s Head of Drama, Jeremy Taylor, I was given the honour of designing the first ever Michael Grigsby Awards for the film unit’s annual awards. The Young Filmmaker of the Year and Spirit of Grigsby prizes were created in honour of Michael, “one of the giants of British documentary filmmaking”, who passed away unexpectedly in March 2013, shortly before our film, ‘We Went to War’ was due to open at the ICA in London, after a hugely successful international festival run. My designs for the awards were skilfully and sensitively realised by my brilliant brother, Hadrian Tolley, using English bog oak, and highly polished stainless steel, and have since been handed out yearly to deserving AFU recipients, over the past decade.
