I spent my childhood trying to distract myself through acting and skiing. At Age 12, my brother learned of the abuse and helped me tell my family, and the perpetrator was put behind bars. But the trauma didn’t end there. By Age 19, a spinal injury, an OxyContin introduction, and the desire to quiet my mental health issues led me to full addiction and homelessness. I had lost all hope. Then, at Age 21, my childhood best friend gave me a second chance. I moved to a program in Portland, Maine, and on 4/18/18, I got sober. That was my fresh start. Now, at Age 28, I’m living proof that recovery is possible.
